Marjorie and (Alfred) George (photo provided by Bill Brind) in 2005. |
Spoke to Alfred George Samuel Brind in August 2002. He told me that he had gone to his grandfather's funeral when he was about eight. It was a traditional funeral with horse driven vehicles.
Also spoke to Bill Brind. |
You have two sons one Brandon (whom i've already been in contact by email) Your father's father was possibly Harry or Henry. He had two brothers and lived in Stepney, somewhere off the Mile End Road
It was your birthday (you're 69) today (April 28). You are the youngest of three brothers born in Stepney. Your brother aged 80 lives in Gidea Park. He is married but has no children. Your oldest brother died. He was married with two daughters.
Your father had a brother called Harry who never married or had any children.
You live in Vancouver. Some time ago you returned to Stepney and found the road you lived in (Ely Terrace) had disappeared. (by the way you may find there is a picture of the road in the local archives department in Stepney).
You left school at 15, starting work as a messanger boy with the BBC. You had three or four jobs within the BBC and then did two years national service. After that you got a job as a clerk with the BBC but you had always been interested in film.
So you went to Toronto and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which was only starting up then, as a film assistant. Then returned to Birmingham in 1958 to work as a film editor.
Then you gave up a perfectly good job with the BBC to join the National Film Board of Canada and were with them for 26 years, latterly on loan to the United Nations, heading a film unit.
Your son and daughter both have degrees. Your son works as an art director of a magazine.
You told me an interesting story about your father who used to
deliver wine to a house owned by Brinds in a very wealthy part of
London. You father believed all Brinds were part of the same family.

I had no idea there were so many Brinds at large, past and present, and some quite remarkable ones at that. Unfortunately I do not have much that I can ad to your current information, although I did talk to my Father, Henry William (Bill) Brind about submitting his own biography. During his career he produced several documentary films that have won international acclaim and almost too many awards to mention. They include the box office hit he made with Bill Mason in 1972 entitled Cry of the Wild. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for High Grass Circus in 1978 and won a Genie Award (Canada's equivalent of an an Academy Award) for Best Theatrical Documentary in 1983 for the film The Devil at Your Heels. However he is quite humble and probably didn't bother to mention this you. If you want to reach him his email is loriandbill@primus.ca Kind regards, Brandon -----------------------------------
