When we were sitting drinking a beer in one of the mountain villages, we suddenly heard a sound like a distant ice cream van. Katy thought it must be one of the local political parties using a tannoy on a vehicle to drum up support. A lot of the locals appeared from nowhere and a beaten up white van parked in the middle of what passed for the village square. When the van was opened it turned out this was the shoe salesman. Katy bought a pair of flip flops. She says they are the first pair she’s ever bought that fit properly! They cost just a few pence, though she could probably have got a cheaper pair in Brick Lane.
We didn’t go to the famous archaeological site close to Heraklion, it was supposed to be too much like Disneyland. But we did go to the national museum which seemed to contain most of the best Minoan objects found. Clearly the Minoans were very impressive.
