Well loved head teacher John Cullis has retired after 32 years' service.

Mr Cullis, 60, left his post at Barclay Junior School, Leyton, last week after spending a number of happy years there.

During his time in Waltham Forest he has held two headships and opened two new schools.

He was temporarily transferred to Leyton Municipal Offices as manager of curriculum support services and once looked after a failing school for seven months.

The Cornishman is affectionately nicknamed Lord Cullis after receiving an MBE for services to education.

He said: "It has been a huge privilege to work for Waltham Forest. I think the nursery and early years' provision in the borough is excellent.

"I thanks the staff that I have worked with -- they have been nothing short of tremendous. I shall miss them and the children terribly.

"I have really enjoyed the global community at Barclay Junior, where 22 languages are spoken."
