Despite the fact that 14 people were arrested and 55 ejected from the ground fans continually invaded the pitch and climbed up pylons and on top of refreshment bars.

One man was arrested after a broken bottle had been thrown into the crowd.

Leyton High Road was in a state of siege with shops closed and barricaded against the mob. But three windows were smashed and the shops that did stay open were hit by petty pilfering.

One newsagent, A. Chappleton, lost £30 worth of ice cream and lighters.
