At five am the first supporter was arrested at Euston Station. Ten others were also held here by transport police after fights with Arsenal fans.

The hooligans then wrecked a tube train which was taken out of service at Leytonstone. In another windows and lights were smashed.

By 1.30p.m. the south bank of Orient was bulging but the fans smashed turnstiles to allow their friends to enter the ground.

Although the official gate was 17,700 more than 25,000 people were thought to have watched.

Chanting began on the south bank more than two hours before the match. If the Orient crowd tried to raise a cheer United fans shouted "shit."
