It appears to be a very flexible, religiously uncommitted sort of place. The Gambians say it is a peaceful oasis in Africa, the place refugees flee to in time of war. In fact they are depressed about the number of immigrants coming into the country. According to the locals the government is so frightened of the possibility of a military coup that they refuse to let the army have loaded weapons.
