The virus: Government message is based on desire to cause fear not science
The disturbing possibility that the reaction to Covid 19 was mass hysteria rather than a measured response to scientific data, is being raised by a rather convincing retired NHS consultant called Dr John Lee.

Dr Lee questions the whole basis of the statistics used to panic people into accepting lockdown, pointing out that the average age of death of a Covid victim is 82, whereas the normal average life expectancy is 81. You seem to live longer if you get Covid 19.

He expects overall mortality (including covid deaths) for the entire covid years to be in the range of the eighth or tenth highest out of the last 20 years, far from the outcome you would expect given the mass hysteria.

He says fear is being used as a tool of Government policy backed by a scientific parardigm created by a narrow group of people from all the developed nations who go to the same conferences and emerge with the same views. His answer would be to abandon narrow cliques like the Government's SAGE group and open up the scientific debate to others who are just as experienced and qualified, but do not share the mind set. Science is about argument and dispute not a tightly controlled message.

As a Professor of pathology who specialises in the control and spread of diseases, he argues that most of the things you think you know about the virus are false: masks prevent the spreading of droplets and disease (wrong); two metre social distancing stops contagion (wrong); lockdown eradicates the disease (wrong).

His main worry is that the Government's panic measures may have caused far more damage than any possible good they could do since no cost benefit analysis seems to have been undertaken. The Government rushed headlong into lockdown because it only considered the 'worst case analysis'.

He is deeply troubled by the fact that during his whole career in the NHS money was never available when it came to doing important work, but during the mass hysteria of the pandemic, many billions could be found for a test and trace programme that obviously could not work. He says this is obvious because Covid 19 is the wrong kind of disease for a test and trace programme since unlike small pox, the only virus that has ever been eradicated, there are no definitive symptoms (it presents as just another respiratory disease). In fact, he argues that the disease is now endemic, like flu or the common cold, with reservoirs in several animal populations from cats to kangaroos. The good news is that it is liable to become less severe over time since viruses are better able to spread if they don't make their host so sick that they are unable to get about.

Dr Lee says much of Government's worst case analysis was unrealistic. He points out that one of the first casualties of the pandemic was the abandonment of the peer review system and as a result a lot of dodgy papers have been published as 'science'.

He speculates that much of the reason why countries like Australia and New Zealand have had more success in dealing with the virus, is that many Corona viruses originate in Asia so populations in the Far East may have T cells equipped to deal with Covid 19, since these may be more long lasting than antibodies even though they are more difficult to identify in tests.

This video has been released by Dr John Lee, a former professor of pathology and NHS consultant pathologist, and a current Spectator columnist. It's 44 minutes long and the background music is deplorable but he makes an extremely convincing case.
