Starmer hobnobs with MI5 chief months after clearing MI5 of torture charges
Labour leader Keir Starmer went to the head of MI5's leaving party months after clearing the spooks of a possible role in torture allegations, according to Declassified chief investigator Matt Kennard. MI5 paid for the drinks.

Keir Starmer, head of the Crown Prosecution Service 2008-13, had to determine whether Sir Jonathan Evans, head of MI5 2007-13, would face torture charges.

The leaving party took place on 16 April 2013 when Keir Starmer was Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Declassified could find no record of any other Director of Public Prosecutions socialising with the head of MI5

Binyam Mohamed, a British resident was arrested in Karachi, Pakistan in April 2002 and interrogated for a week allegedly with various torture techniques. Mohamed said that as well as being questioned by his American captors, an MI5 officer, later known as Witness B, had also taken part.

In September 2001 Evans had become director of international counter terrorism at MI5 and was in this position when Mohamed was snatched, tortured and rendered by the CIA, with MI5 involvement.

This story about Starmer's relationship with MI5 throws a new light on the recruitment of Sue Gray as chief of staff for the Labour Party. Sky News says Sue Gray was in talks with the Labour leadership for several months before the announcement was made.

Sue Gray, who was appointed to produce a whitewash designed to clear the name of Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, worked for MI5 or MI6. The only question was which one?

My belief that Keir Starmer needed to deal with the spooks before they dealt with him since they have a track record of plotting against PMs (Anthony Eden, Harold Wilson) now looks like it was misjudged. In December I posted Starmer must bring secret police to heel to save himself.

The timescale, uncovered by Sky News, showed discussions only began after her probe into partygate concluded - but while the Privileges Committee of MPs was gathering evidence about Boris Johnson's behaviour.
