When the Lea Navigation was used by barges carrying huge cargoes of timber to supply Lathams, the water was dark, oily and deadly looking. But today there are freshwater mussels in the water and swans are plentiful. There was even a black swan (a little further up river towards Tottenham) a while back, but goodness only knows where that came from. (23/Jan/2010)
