Section two

JOHN BRENDE 1551-1606

William, the son of John, was the first of the family to be mentioned in the Highworth Parish records. The registers start in 1539 during the reign of Henry VIII, but there are a few missing years up to 1585, therefore it is assumed that John was born elsewhere. The only baptism recorded of a John in the area in this perod is John son of William Brynde at South Marston in 1551 (see Section 1) and as John left property in South Marston it is almost certain that he moved-to Highworth from that village, if so he moved before 1580 - see page 2-2A.

As the only John Brynd in the Highworth Hundred located to date he is probably the one elected Constable in 1589.

The Highworth Church records show that he had the following family:
William 1587-1645
John 1590-1634 see next section
Bridget 1592-1601
Henrye 1595d 1598
Thomas 1603

In his will of 1606 which is in this section he is shown as being a Yeoman and his family as:
Wife - Ursula William (d. 1610)
John
Henrye
Thomas
Elizabeth
Anne
Margaret

Anne died in 1635 and from her will which is also in this section the following information is gleaned:

Mention is made of William Munday.

Perhaps Henrye and Thomas were killed in the Civil War.

Anne-1635
William 1587-1645 m Edith Toms at Purton in 1616 she died 1626 at Highworth
 m Ann Lovelock in 1628died 1655
Margaret m William Munday
John 1590-1634see next section
Bridget 1592-1601
Henrye 1595
Elizabeth
Thomas 1603

During John's life Highworth suffered from the plague in 1570 and a poor harvest in 1597. In the second half of the 16th century England's population had grown by about 45%. By the beginning of the 17th century Wiltshire's population was slightly above the national average, pressure on land was severe and by 1590 in the North of the County land holdings had been subdivided, over half were less than 20 acres in extent.

In the church records of Purton and Highworth the family of his son and heir, William, is shown as:

Agnes (Anne)
Bap Parton 1616-
m Richard Goulding in May 6, 1639 Highworth
Elinor (Hellen) 1619
Margaret 1621-
Edith 1623-
Thomas -1625
John
1626

It is likely that the John born in 1626 was the one who sold a butcher's stall in Highworth market in 1675 and was Church Warden in 1678 and 1679.
