Hi Julie and Jonathan

Looking at Documents Online of the National Archives, I see there is a will of John Brind, Gentleman of Wanborough dated 20 June 1681. I haven't bought it, but wondered if he might be the nephew John's father, instead of Thomas. Have either of you a copy of that one?

Is this nephew the John who married Frances Kingsmill in 1680 according to Boyd's Marriage Index?

There is also a document which contains the wills of both Margaret and Dorothy Brind dated 08 July 1748. Do you have that one? Judging by the date, and assuming that they didn't die too long before, it seems possible that they were siblings of John, or at least the same generation.

Jonathan, I have noted Martha as being born about 1610. But then, I really have no evidence of when she was born. Do you know her heritage? Was she the daughter of Nicolas of Wanborough born Jun 1 1615? I don't find a record of a Thomas with the same father, just a Jane.

I am trying to get my head around the number of places mentioned in relation to these Brind/Pleydell/Goddard families that are all so close to Swindon. I have 13 of them on my list. Thank goodness for Google maps!

Thanks for your help and interest
Phyl

You really are brilliant and you have obviously spent many years on this research. I have only got on to this because I was trying to establish the relationship between Margaret and Dorothy Brind and the Goddards. Richard Goddard of Swindon, a childless widower, made a will in 1718 leaving his estates to his unmarried brother Pleydell. If Pleydell died without heirs Margaret Brind, his cousin and kinswoman was to take the name of Goddard and inherit the estates. You can imagine that there was uproar amongst his Goddard cousins and eyebrows raised as to what exactly was Richard's relationship to the ladies, who were living with him. Richard died and then Pleydell fell from his horse while leading a charge against a fervent evangelist preacher and also died. Luckily Richard had made a fresh will and after Pleydell's death a very distant cousin inherited the large estates and the money. However the two ladies lived in some luxury until their deaths a few years later.

Yes, I can see how people credit John Brind of Wanborough with being a son of Thomas - and brother to the two ladies Margaret and Dorothy, but I have not yet found his baptism, a wedding, or a death or a memorial for him. Have you? The antiquarian Sir Thomas Phillipps in the 1870s produced a tree with a note about Martha Pleydell's will mentioning a nephew John Brind and has placed him under Thomas's name in the speculative tree which he produced.

Lt Col. David Brind of 147 Bouverie Avenue South, Salisbury, Wilts SP2 8EB has a lot of material. Jonathan Brind of .the above e-mail address and 519 Lea Bridge Road,. London E10 7EB have much information on the family.

It will take a few days to look at the pieces which you sent, but I will get back to you.

PS No, my husband has no relationship to the Swindon Goddards with their once big estates and money. His great great grandfather was ejected from one parish in Winchester for being a liability!
