October 24th 2002 Dear Jonathan We have just started tracing my husband's family tree. His mother's maiden name was Brind. We obtained details of your name and address from the Guild of One Name Studies at the Oxfordshire family history fair last Saturday. My mother in law Lilian Emma Brind was born in Bodmin in November 1913. She had an older sister Gwen born in 1909 and two younger brothers Clarence and Herbert (born 1923).Their father Charles Brind grew up in Sunninghill near Ascot. Charles was one of eight brothers all of whom fought in the First World War. We have a copy of the Daily Mirror February 8th 1917 with a photograph of the eight brothers-- seven of them in uniform and Harold still in civilian clothes as he came back from America about hat time to enlist. My husband only knows the name of one other brother-- Percy-- who was younger than his grandfather (Charles). The father of these eight young men was Thomas Brind and he appeared in the photograph with his sons. The caption of the photographs states that Thomas Brind has two brothers each of whom had lost a son. Although my husband's grandfather, Charles, moved to Cornwall there were a number of family members who stayed in the Ascot area and my husband's Auntie Gwen used to go to Berkshire to stay with her father's relations in the 1950s.
