This is a colourised picture of the Beedon beekeeper. The only thing we know about him is that the picture was taken around 1900 and he was an octogenarian. At the time there was only one octogenarian in Beedon, Enoch Brind.

Thanks Jonathan for your email.

William Woodley had five write-ups in the British Bee Journal and this one touches on how he came to Stanmore to live with his Great Aunt. (see the 2nd paragraph)

I think the John and Martha Brind that looked after the young William Woodley were respectively born in 1799 and 1800 (as per 1871 census).

An amazing piece of detective work and you could well be right.

This is the Enock you mention

This is a picture of my ancestor: my great great grandfather John Brind.

In my view the two look very similar.

John's father was Enock's brother Elijah. Elijah and Enock had a sister Martha, but I know nothing about her.

Dear Jonathan,

I am researching a Bee-Farmer called William Woodley (1846 - 1923) who in his younger life lived in Stanmore (Beedon) and was looked after by his Aunt Martha Brind.

William Woodley later became famous in Bee-keeping circles and had Britain's largest Bee-Farm during the 1890s which consisted of two apiaries:- one at Worlds End and one at Stanmore. William's bee-farm consisted of 150 hives of honeybees.

At his Stanmore apiary, I believe he employed a man called Enoch Brind (not sure if he is related to Martha Brind) to watch his bees and capture any swarms. I have written a blog about this

As a long shot, I was wondering whether you or someone you know might have a photograph of Enoch Brind. I hope this might verify that the man in the chair in the photograph I have posted in my blog is Enoch?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Steven Herbert
