In the name of God Amen

I Dorothy Brind of Swindon in the County of Wilts spinster being God be praised in good health of body and of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament

First I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body I commit to the earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my Executrix and in sure and certain hopes of a joyful resurrection to eternal life through the merits and mediation of my beloved Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ and I dispose of my worldly estate as followeth (Viz.)

Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my sisters Mary Broadway Jane Merchant and Anne Read the sum of twenty pounds a piece for mourning

Item all the rest and residue of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath unto my dear sister Margaret Brind whom I do make sole executrix hereof desiring her to dispose and give to my particular friends what she shall think proper in token and remembrance of me

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirtieth day of August one thousand seven hundred and forty two

In the eight day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty eight administration with the will annexed of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of Dorothy Brind late of Swindon in the county of Wilts spinster deceased was granted to Thomas Hodges esquire executor of the will of Margaret Brind spinster deceased (whilst living) the sister sole executrix and residuary legatee named in the said will being first sworn duly to administer Margaret Brind surviving the said testatrix but dying before she had taken upon her the execution of the said will.

I * Margaret Brind* of Swindon in the County of Wilts spinster being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following (that is to say

I first commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body I commit to the earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my executors hereafter named under the seats as near to the reading desk as conveniently be in Swindon church and to be carried thither by twelve poor men to whom I give ten shillings each for their trouble and as to my worldly estate which God has been pleased out of his infinite mercy to bestow on me I dispose thereof as followeth:-

That is to say

First I give and bequeath unto my loving brother-in-law* Thomas Read *and* Anne* his wife the sum of twenty twenty pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain to buy them mourning

Also I give and bequeath unto *Thomas Hedges* of London a merchant and to his sisters* Eleanor* wife of [ ] *Montague* esquire and to *Elizabeth Hedges* spinster son and daughters of *William Hedges* esquire the sum of fifty pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath to my cousins *Mary Bennet* of Moredon in the parish of Rodbourne Cheney in Wilts spinster and to *Margaret Smith* (daughter of* Michael* *Smith* of Compton Basset in Wilts gentleman) spinster the sum of fifty pounds a piece of like lawful money

Also I give and bequeath unto my cousins *Sarah* and *Mary Maskelyne* daughters *William Maskelyne* of the Leigh gent. and also to my cousins *Sarah* and *Mary* *Waldron* (daughters of* John Waldron* of the same place gentleman) the sum of twenty five pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto *Margaret* wife of [ ] *Boyce* of Camden in Gloucestershire clerk the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto *John Hobbs *of Swindon aforesaid maltster the sum of forty pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto *William Horne* of Swindon aforesaid gentleman and to his brother *Edward Horne* of the City of London mercer the sum of twenty pounds apiece of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto my servant *Mary Ketchaside* otherwise *Kitchouse* the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto *Anne* wife of *Samuel Sheppard* of Pirton in Wilts mercer the sum of five pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto* Lucy* and *Anne Goddard* daughters of *Ambrose* *Goddard* esquire the sum of ten pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give and bequeath unto *Mary* and *Robert Dixon* daughter and son of *John* *Dixon* of Swindon aforesaid apothecary the sum of ten pounds apiece of like lawful money

And to my god daughter* Scholastica* wife of William *Sevile *of the parish of Bisley in Gloucestershire clothier I give the sum of five pounds of like lawful money

Also I give and bequeath unto the children of the late *Henry Iles *of Wanborough in* *Wilts carpenter deceased the sum of five pounds apiece of like lawful money

Also I give and bequeath unto *Mary Rich *(daughter of *Edward Gilbert* of Dodswell in Gloucestershire esquire) the sum of five pounds of like lawful money

Also I give and bequeath unto my servant *Anne Archard* to *Susannah* wife of *George Wayt* of the parish of Wroughton in Wilts miller and to *Sarah* wife of [ ] *Cox* of Moredon in the parish of Rodbourne Cheney aforesaid yeoman the sum of five pounds apiece of like lawful money and to *Elizabeth Langton* widow servant to *Thomas Vilett *esquire to *Susanna Durham* of Swindon aforesaid widow and to *Elizabeth* wife of *Henry King* I give forty shillings each

Also I give to the nurses *Martha Nash* and *Anne Watts* forty shillings a piece and for such person as hath set up with and attended on my late sister *Dorothy* in her illness and also to such persons as shall set up and attend with me in mine and also to *Susanna* wife of *Richard Hunter* I give twenty shillings apiece

Also I give to* Richard Wayt *son of said *George *and *Susanna* one guinea

Also I give to the several persons following (to wit) to* Ambrose Goddard* esquire and *Mary* his wife *Elizabeth Goddard* and *Priscilla Goddard* (sons and daughters of said *Ambrose Goddard* esq.),

Also I give and bequeath unto the Ministers of the parish of Swindon and Wanborough aforesaid the sum of two guineas each of like lawful money

Also I give and bequeath to the Minister Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish of Swindon aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain on trust nevertheless that they or their successors for the time being do and from time to time place out the same to such interest or lay out the same in the purchase of any lands or tenements and the interest or product of such lands so to be purchased as aforesaid shall and will apply for the benefit of and distribute the same to and amongst such of the poor people of the parish of Swindon aforesaid as the Minister Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said parish for the time being shall think proper on the twentieth day of July yearly for ever

Also I give and bequeath to the Minister churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish of Wanborough aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain in trust nevertheless that they or their successors for time being do and shall from time to time place out the same to interest or lay out the same on the purchase of any lands or tenements the the interest arising therefrom or the rents of such land so purchased shall and will apply the same for the benefit of and distribute the same to and amongst such of the poor people of the parish of Wanborough aforesaid as the Minister churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said parish for the time being shall think proper on the said twentieth day of July yearly for ever

Also I do hereby give and devise unto the Minister and Churchwardens of the parish of Swindon the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money on Trust only to purchase an handsome branch to be hung in the Parish Church of Swindon aforesaid for the use of the said parishioners

Also I do hereby order and direct my said Executors that they lay out a sum of money not exceeding twenty pounds to erect a monument for myself and my late sister *Dorothy* in Swindon Church aforesaid

Also I do hereby give and bequeath unto my said brother in law *Thomas Read *all and all manner of sum and sums of money that is now due and owing to me or to any other person whatsoever on trust for me or for my use any mortgage bond note or otherwise howsoever and I do hereby acquit release and discharge my said brother in law his heirs executors or administrators and his and their goods and chattels lands and tenements of and from the payment thereof or of any part thereof also I do hereby give and bequeath unto my loving sister *Anne Read *the yearly sum of forty pounds of lawful British money to be paid to her exclusive of her said husband during the term of her natural life by four equal quarterly payments in the year (to wit /upon/ on Saint John the Baptist Saint Michael the Archangel Saint Thomas the Apostle and the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Saint to be issuing and payable to her by my Executors hereafter named (out of the interest arising from the moneys and estate by me given them) clear of all deductions whatsoever The first payment thereof to be made on the first of the said feasts as shall next happen after my decease and my said sister's receipt shall be a sufficient discharge to my said executors or either of them

I give and bequeath unto *Mary* the wife of *Thomas Vilett* of Swindon aforesaid esquire my diamond earrings and also my best set of damask linen (to wit a table cloth and twelve napkins and also my worked bed and bedstead with the curtains valance and appurtenances thereunto belonging which bed is now in the chamber over the parlour

Also I give and bequeath unto my said cousin *Margaret Smith* my other worked bed in the chamber over the kitchen with the bedstead bed and appurtenances thereto belonging

Also I give to my sister the said *Anne Read* my two best suits of clothes as she shall choose and to the said *Margaret Smith* and *Mary Jenner* of Moredon aforesaid I give two suits of clothes each and to my servant *Mary Ketchaside *otherwise *Kitchouse* I give two suits of clothes and also my little bed bedstead and bedding with the appurtenances in the garret

Also I give to my servant *Anne Archard *one suit of clothes and the residue of my wearing apparel I give to be divided between the said *Sarah Cox */*Elizabeth King*// /*Elizabeth Langton Susannah Durham* and such of my relations as my executors shall think fit

Also I give to *Anne* wife of *John Dixon* of Swindon aforesaid apothecary my largest pair of silver boats[?]

Also I give and bequeath my gold watch that was my sister *Dorothy*'s to the said *Jane* *Smith* of Compton aforesaid spinster with the chain seal and appurtenances thereto belonging also all the rest of my jewels rings plate and my gold watch with the chain seal and appurtenances I give and bequeath the same to my sister *Anne* *Read* if she shall be living at the time of my decease But in case she shall not survive me then all my jewels and rings I give to the children of the said* Margaret Boyce *the said *Mary Jenner Sarah *and *Mary Waldron Sarah *and *Mary Maskelyne* equally to be divided between them And also in case my said sister shall not survive me then I give my gold watch with the chain seal and appurtenances thereto belonging to *Thomas Goddard* of Swindon aforesaid esquire

Also all the rest of my household goods and furniture not before disposed of I give the same to my said sister *Anne Read*

Whereas there is due to me from *John Hobbs* of Swindon maltster by note of hand the sum of ninety pounds I do hereby in consideration of his services for me forgive him also the said sum of thirty pounds with all the interest due thereon and desire my executors to deliver up the said note to him or otherwise cancel the same

Also I give and bequeath to the said *William Horne* the further sum of thirty pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give to *Frances Hodges* of Salisbury spinster the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money and to* Margaret *of *Walter Brind* [sic] of Liddington Wilts I give the sum of twenty pounds of like lawful money of Great Britain

Also I give the the said *Walter Brind* and his wife and to the rest of their children and also to his brother *Benjamin Brind* [ ] the sum of forty shillings each of lawful money and [ ] *Harrison* of Gloucestershire clerk and to *John Shorthose* son of *Mary Shorthose *the sum of ten pounds each of like lawful money Also I give to the three sisters *Frances Margaret* and [ ] *Brooks* of Calne in Wilts spinsters and also to *Priscilla* wife of *George Jones *of Calne aforesaid grocer the sum of one guinea each

And my will is and I do hereby order and direct that all my said legacies herein before bequeathed and given shall be discharged by my executors in twelve months next after my decease notwithstanding the minority of any of the legatees herein before named whose legacy shall be paid in such case to his or her parent or guardian whose receipt shall be sufficient for the same to my said executors and lastly all the cost and residue of my moneys and estate wheresoever and whatsoever not herein before bequeathed or given (after my debts legacies and funeral expenses are paid and satisfied and also subject to the payment of the yearly sum of forty pounds to my said sister *Anne Read* herein before given) I give devise and bequeath the same unto *Michael Smith* the younger of Alton in Wilts esquire *Thomas Hodges* of London merchant and to [ ] *Boyce* of Camden in Gloucestershire clerk to and for his and their own and proper use equally to be divided between them share and share alike and I do hereby make constitute and appoint the said *Michael Smith* the younger *Thomas Hodges* and [ ] *Boyce* joint executors of this my last will and testament revoking all former wills by me made I do publish and declare

this to be my last will and testament and no other

In witness whereof I the said *Margaret Brind* the testatrix have to this my last will and testament set my hand to the three first sheets and my hand and seal to the fourth this sixth day of May in the twenty first year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George the second by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred forty eight

This Will was proved at London before the worshipful *Robert Chapman *Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Worshipful *John Bettesworth* also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted on the eight day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty eight by the oath of *Thomas Hedges* esquire one of the executors in the said will named to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the deceased being first sworn only to administer power reserved to make the ......? grant to *Michael Smith* the younger Esquire and to [ ] *Boyce* of Camden in Gloucestershire clerk the other executors when they or either of them shall apply for the same. /Exd./
