Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Brind and his Descendants

William Henry. Received a classical and mathematical educationat King William's College, Isle of Man, and at Mr Vickery'sNaval Academy, Portsmouth. He joined EIC Indian Navy In 1856and served as a Midshipman on the steam frigate 'Punjaub',throughout the Persian campaign of 1856/57, he was presentat the landing under heavy fire In Hallulah bay. taking ofthe Bushire forts and various other engagements & was wounded.Iv'edal with clasp. He then took part in several boat engagementsIn the canton river and on the north coast of China duringthe war of 1857. in 1858 he transferred to the 1st BengalEuropean Fusiliers, but It looks as if he served with theI^avnl Brigade during the first part of the Indian Mutiny inLower Bengal. He was at the actions of Barrie Bridge, Nawabgungeand Kintour. the engagement with and capture of five guns fromthe Nusserabad Brigade and several other actions in Oudh.Medal (I)

He served with the 22nd Punjab Infantry in the ChinaWar of I860 and in 1861 was engaged in the defence of Shanghaiagainst the Taiping rebels. He was then transferred to theBritish Army with the -2nd Bengal European Fusiliers whichwere renumbered as HM 104th Regiment of Foot and later theRoyal Munster Fusiliers. In about 1872 he transferred to theRoyal Dublin Fusiliers and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He had one son Alfred Frederick who after recoveringfrom typhoid fever went to Canada as a farm pupil in 1890,but he'returned to the UK and in due course had a period ofgreat wealth with a house in Park Lane. In 1914 he joined theRNVR and in 1916 the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). He servedon airships and reach the rank of Plight Commander, but afteran accident he was restricted to administrative duties. In1918 he was transferred with the RNAS to the RAF with whomhe attained the rank of Major.

His eldest son Marcus, was killed in a road accident in1930. I understand that he and his father were both educatedat Harrow, After the death of his first wife her second son Benwas brought up by her sister and her husband Mr Dewhurstand they sent him to Stowe were he excelled at sport. He thenjoined a Merchant company in China with whom he remained forfive years after which he moved to another trading company inIndia. During the second World War he was commissioned intothe Indian Navy. In 1950 he returned to the UK, joined Distillersand in due course became Managing Director of one of theirsubsidiary companies.

It is interesting that his eldest son Julian Hardymaintained the family connection with the wine trade. Hequalified as a Master of Wine and is the longest serving headof wine buying in any UK Supermarket Group (Waitrose). Ben'sdaughter Olivia Rose married David Band who became ChiefExecutive of BZW - the Merchant Bank subsidiary of BarclaysBank. Hie second son Alexander Liot has had various jobs inLondon and is interested in music. Pictures of Alfred andBen end his wife Eve are attached.
