| Richard Brind, carpenter, son of John and Ann Winn, born 1813 according to the Marriage Certificate married in 1839 Mary Ann Hawkins and then had, I believe, a daughter Mary Ann who died shortly after birth in 1844. They then had Sophia Louisa in 1846 and Mary Ann in 1850 and they appear in the 1851 Woolwich Census living in Brewer Street. Richard appears to have died in 1860 but I
haven't found an entry in the 1861 Census to confirm this but in the 1871 Census Mary Ann is a widow, still living in Brewer Street with her daughter Mary Ann. Her daughter Sophia is an assistant at a draper's shop in Deptford High Street, Sophia marries George
Gray in 1874. In the 1881 Census Mary Ann is a lodger with her daughter Mary Ann Dressmaker, in Putney, Surrey and the same in the 1891 Census and the 1901. Mary Ann dies in 1909 aged 89. Her daughter appears in the 1911 Census aged 60. She has never married. Jennifer O'Sullivan July 2011

As a postscript to Mary Ann Brind, I felt I should try and find out what happened to her after the 1911 Census. I found only two deaths which matched her date of birth, one in Portsmouth, Hampshire and the other in Shipston on Stour Warwickshire. I then looked at her sister Sophia Louisa Gray (Brind). She and her family by 1891 had moved to Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire which was where her husand George was born. Shipston on Stour registration district spans the boundaried of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire and includes Moreton in Marsh. I found Sophia's death in 1923 with Mary Ann's following in 1929. George H. Gray, Sophia's husband, outlived them both dying in 1932. I have none of the requisite certificates but feel that this is the most likely scenario.Jennifer O'Sullivan July 2011 |
