Subject: Brind family Date: 22 November 2006 11:21:31 GMT Hi there I wonder if you might be able to fill in any gaps in my family tree. I have attached what I know already but am lost after my great great gradmother who came from Ireland and married a Brind there! I am the daughter of sandra Heritage who you can see on the right hand side of the tree under Frederick Charles brind, my grandfather. Any help you can give me would be fantastic as my mother knows nothing about her history! Many many thanks Lisa |

Hi Jonathan My information comes from lots of digging around in the family and from certificates that I have from the records office but obviously I got stuck with the Irish connection!! I can give you some background if my Brinds match yours? Thomas Henry Brind was a prison warder at Warwick, Carlisle and Wandsworth prisons. He did as a result of an injury sustained in an altercation at the prison and as a result his children were put into the Uxbridge workhouse for three months. The children were then removed from the workhouse and my grandfather went to live with his mothers sister. She was living with a William Heritage and my grandfather took his name. My grandfather was known all throughout his life as Charles heritage and his real name only came to light many years later when my mum casually mentioned it!!! Since then I have been trying to find out more about the Brinds and that is what lead me to your site. I have the birth certificate for Thomas Henry Brind but the fathers name is left off of the certificate so we are unsure of his fathers name. We also do not have copies of certificates for his sister Catherine as she was born on the seas on the way over from ireland and the same for James who was born in Dublin. As you can see, I know a fair bit and if anything does tally up with your Brinds, it would be great to know more about them! If I can send you anything that will help your research in return please let me know. There is all sorts, such as my grandfather being an engineer on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and his sister Alice running a sheep ranch in Australia!!!!! There are lots more Brinds in Aus because Alice and Harold (another brother) emigrated there years ago!!! My address for the CD is: Lisa Harding 116 Willowmead Close Goldsworth Park Woking Surrey GU21 3DW Many many thanks for all your help and please keep in touch! We must all be related somehow I think! Hi Jonathan
I have subsequently found out some information that you may find interesting about Thomas Henry Brind who's birth certificate we cold not make out.
The information below relates to Thomas Brind who was married to Elizabeth at the very top of my Brind Tree and who we assumed was Thhomas Henry Brind's father. As I found the birth certificate of Catherine Brind (attached) it shows her father Thomas Brind was a Sergeant in the 14th regiment of foot. I did some digging around and I found out quite a lot about the regiment that Thomas Brind served with. They were stationed in Ireland in 1850 which makes sense as this the time that he married Elizabeth. They were then stationed out in Malta where Catherine was born in 1854. There is a book on the Naval and Military Press website that I have ordered today that gives a detailed history of the regiment and its officers and I hope that there is something about Thomas Brind in there that might be interesting. Also as we can confirm that the regiment was stationed in Ireland at this time, we may be able to find his marriage to Catherine if he was in the service at the time. It may be of course that he was not but then there is nothing to suggest that he was Irish so I think more that he was in the service and the marriage was while he was there. I will have a look but it would be a good help if you did too -- two heads and all that. I am also going to check the CD that Jonathan Brind sent me to see if there is anything on there and see if I can find out more. |
As for his death. Well I finally have something that I can report that you may now know. I found a Malta genealogy site and they have a record detailed as: Sergeant Brind. Died 19th May 1864. His death was caused by the effect of charcoal burning in a small room. What that means I have no idea but he certainly did not die in warfare. I have contacted the person who runs the site to see can send me a copy of the records that this is mentioned in to see if we can find out more. Of course this means that poor Catherine lost her father and Elizabeth her husband only a week before the baptism (if we go by the date on your birth certificate for her). It would then appear that Elizabeth returns home with the two children and ends up for some reason in Uxbridge. Thomas Henry is then born later to father unknown as we can see from his certificate. |
I think that the reason that Elizabeth ended up in the workhouse was because her children did not take kindly to her having another child and so did now want to know her. At the same time, Thomas Henry is in the same workhouse. I think the two of them were left by James and Catherine and sadly Elizabeth dies in 1871 and there is no one left to look after Thomas Henry who has to find his own way in life. It is such a sad and sorry tale isn't it if this is indeed what happened? On this evidence I am not sure that we will ever find out who Thomas Henry Brind's real father was. I hope that this is of use to you and maybe you will have some pointers of where I can head next to find out more about Thomas Brind and even if I can find his marriage to Elizabeth and where he was born to see if he fits in with any of the trees on your fantastic CD??? |
