Subject: Brind family Date: 22 November 2006 11:21:31 GMT Hi there I wonder if you might be able to fill in any gaps in my family tree. I have attached what I know already but am lost after my great great grandmother who came from Ireland and married a Brind there! I am the daughter of sandra Heritage who you can see on the right hand side of the tree under Frederick Charles brind, my grandfather. Any help you can give me would be fantastic as my mother knows nothing about her history! Many many thanks Lisa |

Hi Jonathan My information comes from lots of digging around in the family and from certificates that I have from the records office but obviously I got stuck with the Irish connection!! I can give you some background if my Brinds match yours? Thomas Henry Brind was a prison warder at Warwick, Carlisle and Wandsworth prisons. He did as a result of an injury sustained in an altercation at the prison and as a result his children were put into the Uxbridge workhouse for three months. The children were then removed from the workhouse and my grandfather went to live with his mothers sister. She was living with a William Heritage and my grandfather took his name. My grandfather was known all throughout his life as Charles heritage and his real name only came to light many years later when my mum casually mentioned it!!! Since then I have been trying to find out more about the Brinds and that is what lead me to your site. I have the birth certificate for Thomas Henry Brind but the fathers name is left off of the certificate so we are unsure of his fathers name. We also do not have copies of certificates for his sister Catherine as she was born on the seas on the way over from ireland and the same for James who was born in Dublin. As you can see, I know a fair bit and if anything does tally up with your Brinds, it would be great to know more about them! If I can send you anything that will help your research in return please let me know. There is all sorts, such as my grandfather being an engineer on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and his sister Alice running a sheep ranch in Australia!!!!! There are lots more Brinds in Aus because Alice and Harold (another brother) emigrated there years ago!!! Many many thanks for all your help and please keep in touch! We must all be related somehow I think! Lisa |

Hi Jonathan Thank you so much for the CD which I received today. My mum (who is technically a Brind even though grandfather was later known as a Heritage) is most interested to see what I find on it and is even more amazed when she found out that you live in Lea Bridge Road as she and my dad live in Bethnal Green!!!! I have attached a couple of things which you may find of interest. One is the birth certificate of my Henry Brind the prison warder. You were right in that he was born in 1859 and I guess the low resolution meant that the date could not be read very well. As you can see it lists his father as unknown and this is the mystery that we most want to solve-- who was he I wonder!!! The second are some more photos of Brinds. Jim Dad and Me is from my mum's cousin Bill Bullock (his father Harold was adopted as was my grandfather so was really a Brind) The likeness between him and my grandfather is uncanny though we have very few pictures of my grandfather. Ernest and Florence is the only surviving picture of Ernest Henry Brind and his wife Florence Holtom when they moved to Australia. Alice Brind also moved to Oz and ran a sheep ranch with her husband Edward Potter. My granddad visited her when he landed in Oz and helped as an Engineer on the Sydney Harbour Bridge!!
The last one is a census return of Henry Brind from the 1891 census when it was just himself and Eliza Mary Godliman when he was a prison warder. I hope all of this is of interest and I hope our paths cross again on the this fantastic journey!! All the best Lisa |

NOTE sent to me: Henry's birth on 8 Jan 1859 is shrouded in mystery, he was registered one month after his birth and at that time he was still unnamed and there is no father registered on the birth certificate. We only know we have the right person because the 1861 census shows him living with his mother and two siblings at High Road, Hayes Middlesex (my note: It is equally possible that he was born abroad and this is a certificate for a different person. JEB). On the 1871 census he is shown as an inmate in the Uxbridge Workhouse. He was admitted on 4 March 1870 as a destitute child and, on further investigation I have found that an Elizabeth Brind, possibly his mother, was admitted to the same institution 2 months earlier, she died a month after her admission. Henry left there on 27 January 1872 but was readmitted on the 12 June 1872 having "left his place" only to leave again on 7 September 1872 for a situation in Shepherds Bush but he was readmitted on 4 August 1873, having again "left his place" after which I can find no record of him leaving the institution and we lose touch with him until his marriage in 1890. |
