The link about Henrietta Brooks who married a Richard Brind is very confusing. Certainly Richard born 1834ish fits the bill but he married Eleanor Collings in 1859. I think it more likely that your suggestion that she was the second wife of Richard Brind born 1797/8 is probably the right one. The fact that they married just two months before she gave birth suggests that marriage may not have been Richard's original intention. His brother John who married Ann Winn, married a much younger woman after Ann's death, a Jane Grice half his age in 1855: so presumimg this is correct (which one should never do) Richard had a precedent. Yaki's tree also says: See reference to the Brind family in the records of the Woolwich district by W T Vincent.

The Records of the Woolwich District W.T. Vincent
Published in the 1890s. W.T. Vincent was the editor of Kentish Independent for 23 years and 30 years as a reporter. The events leading up to the proposal for a steam ferry and the opening are covered.

Vincent was evidently a colourful character and I believe his effigy was once burnt by an angry mob protesting about the privatisation of public land. I think he had given evidence in some kind of court case.

In 1841 a family of Glovers were neighbours of Richard and Sarah Brind. Michael Glover, head of the family, was not from Middlesex, and aged about 40. Sarah Brind (nee Glover) was of the same sort of age and like Michael was not born in Middlesex. Were they brother and sister? If so perhaps they were born in Wiltshire, since Sarah's death was recorded in Wiltshire.

Thanks for your response.
The Bible is a thick octavo, bound in leather and measuring 200mm x 130mm x 60mm thick. Originally it was fastened by two brass clasps (now broken). Philip, lord Wharton, 4th Baron Wharton (1613-96), was a devout Protestant who left money in his will to pay for bibles to be distributed by his trustees. This is one such example.
I attach photos of the inscriptions on the first free endpaper and the inside of the back cover. In deference to privacy concerns of my immediate family I have covered over relatively recent details added by my own father. What I know of Henrietta Brooks is as follows (you will probably know much or all of this already). Her parents were George Brooks and Elizabeth Kensall who married on 6 September 1838. Henrietta appears to have been their third daughter and was born in Poplar of 3rd Feb 1844. Her first husband was Richard Brind whom she married in September 1866, in Poplar. So far as I know Richard Brind died in Poplar in June 1867; perhaps you can confirm this?).
Henrietta Brind, now a widow, married my great-grandfather, George Gates, in Stepney on 23rd February 1874. So far as I know they had six children, of whom three died in infancy. The 1891 census describes Henrietta, then 46, as 'deaf'. She died at 146 Abbott Road, Bromley, aged 57, on 1st January 1896. The death certificate gives the cause of death as 'phthisis, 15 months' which probably means TB. She was buried in the East London Cemetery on 7th January 1896 (grave no. 19883).
If there is anything else I can tell you, please let me know. Equally if you can offer me anything more I would be most grateful. My greatest problem has been in trying to discover the parentage of George Gates in which I have mostly failed.
Best wishes,
Tim

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Have you got a copy of the family tree in the bible? I'd like to see it.

Dear Jonathon,
I have just come across a post placed on the web by Joan Flood, in November 2009, concerning her husband's great-grandmother (Henrietta Brooks), to which you replied with further details of her family and marriage.
As it happens, Henrietta Brooks's second husband was my great-grandfather, George Gates.
I have in my possession a bible that belonged to George Brooks in 1832 (when he was a boy of 14 years old). It contains notes on various marriages and descendants of his family.
Over the coming days I will see what else I can come up with.
I have sent an email to Joan Flood using the address given in her 2009 post and thought I'd contact you also.
Best wishes,
Tim Gates
