The 1901 Census shows John (Thomas?) Brind as a Police Constable at Rowde near Devizes Wilts. I have looked at the Police Records for this period which are held at the Wilts & Swindon History Centre atChippenham and they show that he had served for 12 years in the Royal Irish Rifles andwhat looks like 2 years in the Boro of South Shields Force before joining the Wilts Policeon 2 Dec 1899 (4th class, then 3rd class 20 Feb 1900 and 2nd class 16 Apr1901). He resigned on 23 Oct 1903 while stationed at Codford. His parents are not shown. The Royal Irish Rifle were formed in 1881 from 83rd and 86th Regts and perhaps his father had served in one of these regts? John Bs army records may be at the National Archives at Kew, but it is unlikely since he did not serve long enough to get a pension. David Brind (July 2013) Click to return. |
